Respond to a joke by adding to it

When someone jokes, laugh, then add one small piece to the joke, like your own version of it. A bare “haha” is kind, and the joke stops there.

Laugh, then add

When someone jokes, laugh, then add one small piece to it.

When someone jokes, they’re inviting you to play along. Laugh so they know you liked it, then add one small piece: take their joke one step further, or say how the same thing goes for you. It doesn’t need to be clever. A bare “haha” is kind, and the joke stops there. Add a little and it keeps going.

When a coworker jokes about being on mute

Tuesday, a video call with a coworker

PaigeSorry, I was on mute. I just gave a whole speech to nobody.

Man’s voice

What would you say?

Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice
Ha! Was it a good one? Take it from the top.
You laughed, then played along with the speech nobody heard. Paige knows the joke worked and gets an easy way to start again.
Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice
No worries, I can hear you now. Go ahead.
Helpful, and it walks past the joke. Paige made being on mute funny; laugh and play along first, then get back to work.
Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice
Ha! It happens.
Kind, and it answers the “sorry,” not the joke. Paige offered you a laugh; add a little to it, and you both get to enjoy it.

Compare the two replies

“My to-do list is so long, it needs its own to-do list.”

Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice

Not this: Haha.

This: Ha! Mine still has stuff on it from last month.

Why does the second reply keep the joke going?

Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice
It laughs harder.
Both replies laugh. A bigger laugh alone still leaves them to find the next line, so look at what comes after it.
Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice
It’s funnier than their joke.
It doesn’t have to be. Trying to beat someone’s joke turns it into a contest; this one just joins in.
Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice
It laughs, then adds to their joke.
The laugh tells them you liked it, and your list from last month is how the same thing goes for you. Now they have something to laugh at too.

When a friend jokes about themselves

ZoeA whole year of Spanish, and all I can do is order a coffee.

Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice

You: Ha! Yeah, languages are hard.

Does this reply keep the conversation going?

Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice
Ends it
True, and it ends the joke. Zoe was playing, and a fact about languages gives her nothing to add to.
Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice
Keeps it going
That one stalls: it’s a fact, not part of the joke. Try “Ha! Honestly, coffee’s the one that matters.”

When someone jokes about where they parked

WesI parked so far away, I should’ve packed a lunch.

Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice

You: Ha! Text me when you make it back to your car.

Does this reply keep the conversation going?

Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice
Ends it
That one’s alive. It laughs, then plays along with the faraway car, so Wes gets an easy joke to add to.
Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice
Keeps it going
You laughed and took Wes’s joke one step further: a walk that long needs a check-in. Now Wes has a joke to add to.

When a friend jokes about their cooking

A friend’s place, just before dinner

Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice

NadiaI followed the recipe exactly, and it looks nothing like the picture.

Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice

Which reply keeps Nadia’s joke going?

Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice
Ha! That’s nothing. You should see mine.
“That’s nothing” waves off Nadia’s joke so yours can take over. Beating a joke turns it into a contest; adding to it keeps it shared.
Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice
No, it looks great!
Kind, and it answers the joke like a worry. Nadia was laughing at it; play along first, and the compliment can come after.
Listen
Woman’s voice
Man’s voice
Ha! That’s how you know it’s homemade.
You laughed, then played along: if it looks nothing like the picture, it must be homemade. That’s a compliment inside the joke, and Nadia gets to laugh with you.

When someone finds their sunglasses on their head

CalebI just spent ten minutes looking for my sunglasses. They were on my head.

Listen

Laugh, then add to Caleb’s joke.

Listen

One way to reply

  1. React to what they saidHa! The one place you didn’t look.
  2. Add something about youI do that with my keys. They’re usually in my hand.

You laughed, then added your keys. Caleb knows it landed and has something to laugh back at.

Lines to leave out

  • You should keep them in the same spot every time. Good advice for a problem Caleb was laughing about. Stay in the joke with him.

  • You’re so funny. Nice to hear, and it closes the joke instead of adding to it.

What the research found

Sharing a laugh made people feel more alike, and closer for it.

Your mission

Next time someone jokes with you, laugh, then add one small piece to their joke, and notice whether they add something back.
